Review how to perform the order of operations.  This example contains parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.

 

First -      Solve any operations inside parentheses.

Second -  Perform any numbers with exponents.

Third -     Go from left to right and do multiplication OR division.  If division appears first from left to right before multiplication, do division first.

Fourth -   Go from left to right and do addition OR subtraction.  If subtraction appears first from left to right before addition, do subtraction first.  If addition appears first from left to right then do addition.

Example:

9 + (2 + 4)^2 ÷ 3 x 3

9 + (6)^2 ÷ 3 x 3

9 + 36 ÷ 3 x 3

9 + 12 x 3

9 + 36
